more 'clay' renders from @danielroseart coming in
so the style of the studio is really coming into context now.
thanks to @danielroseart for these renders. we will be doing a lot more render projects for a future ipad application - i suggest if you are looking for a 3d render artist or a canvas painter drop dan a line or let me know what you are looking for and i'll hook you up with dan.reorganising the fibre studio configuration layout
i was moving the studio around yesterday.
- ledge above door with bracket to camera @ head height
- sofa on the side wall for weekly show
- main free standing box for twin shot
- old style sofa seats and old reading lighting
- fixed webcam and blue snowball for video chat
- lighting attached to the gazebo I also came up with a genius idea yesterday that will be very useful for our projects on pcmprojects and also be useful for the studio. i'm keeping it a bit hush hush to raise a bit of excitement because we have to have something custom built and find some cash to enable us to be able to get the kit together. i promise you thou it's gonna be awesome. i spent a few hours yesterday making sure it would work on the configuration i wanted for the lowest possible footprint. more soon.. .
PCMprojects digital post-it 14th June 2010
We used boinxtv in basic mode today quickly and uploaded the content to vimeo. should have it setup to stream out to bambuser next week but it does not give us that better picture quality that wirecast does - we are testing a bunch of applications that give us different features that we can offer from the studio.
donations welcomed for a second lapel mic welcomed. we are actually looking around now for additional kit. first thing is a bluetooth keypad. you'll see why in the coming week.

It's time to shout about our creatives in nottingham [repost]
THE science and technology industries in Nottingham have been getting a lot of the spotlight recently, and deservedly so. The Invest in Nottingham campaign has been shouting about Nottingham from the rooftops, and it's time for those of us in the city's creative industries to help ensure that the digital and creative assets are profiled equally highly.
At one end of the spectrum we have organisations such as Antenna and Crytec, who have built excellent reputations, and at the other end we have a huge amount of young creative talent coming out of Nottingham's two universities.
We need to create a collision of the city's technical expertise with our creative and communications skills – the combination will do wonders for Nottingham's economy.
A lot of creative people came to the recent promotional event at Centrepoint in London which showcased Nottingham's strengths and generated phenomenal interest in our offer.
![]()
We now need you and other creative industry players to put your weight behind the Invest in Nottingham campaign, and the event on May 27 that is luring people from the capital.
There should be greater profile for the creative industries on the 27th and there still could be. All you have to do is take part, and get involved.
The creative sector here is not that well led, and we need everyone to take the initiative. This way we can be a showcase for the creative talent in Nottingham and show we are not about bikes and tobacco anymore.
As Craig Chettle of Antenna told me, "we have a thriving creative industry in Nottingham but we're all busy getting on with business – we should take a bit of time to tell the outside world how good we are!"
So don't sit on your hands, come and get involved and use May 27 as a vehicle to promote your skills to potential clients from across the UK.
We could create a Creative Industries Day of our own, in September or October, and present our world-leading creative skills to external visitors, showing them that we are a very serious sector with great potential.
Nottingham is soon to become one of the top three broadband centres in the UK, thanks to a recent discovery that is being announced on the 27th.
All fibre optics are laid along railway lines, and they converge (just next to Homebase) in what has been described as the equivalent of a digital Heathrow airport. This hub is soon to be capitalised on, giving us one of the biggest broadband capacities in the UK – a huge bonus for all our creative industries. I hear they're telling us all about this on May 27.
E-mail kay@investinnottingham.co.uk to find out more about the Invest in Nottingham Day and discover how you can get involved, and let's make this the start of the creative industries self-promotion campaign!
Let me know what you think by e-mailing me at mark@markshaw.co.uk.
Alexia Leachman interviews Kuldeep Brar | lovephool.com
a great little interview for her forthcoming videoblog series.
booking a session in the webstreaming fibre studio
an affinity moment understanding attraction
i find it weird that my old show 'thegravity' title name seems to have such an affinity at the moment with the way the laws of gravity/attraction are bringing certain people into my life that are positive, upbeat and that have a calming influence on my life.
'thegravity'show was a very low budget, poorly put together greenscreen tech, ideas and naval gazing idea i put together about tech, services and general catchup that always had delusions of grandeur about being a useful 'british' tech show. now i have the access to a super fast internet fibre connection at the @lacemarkethouse over in nottingham i want to take 'thegravity' to the next level. I'm in the process today therefore with @pcmcreative (CJ) of putting together a production schedule for recording weekly shows and wrapping that together with screencasts regarding the process of how we get that show 'out there' on the internet, what we will be using for distribution of the video and 'behind the scenes' of what goes on in the studio to give potential clients the 'backstory' of how this stuff works and 'why' you should be paying to use the studio. i think it is a process that needs to be talked about. Anyway, going to crack on with that. An interesting phase has begun.
a great turnout and a fantastic mediacamp nottingham
what a fantastic day. still rejoicing in the fact that lots of keen media makers turned up and wanted to learn a bunch of new stuff
With my head still in the clouds after southby (sxsw) the mediacamp had quickly rolled around and i found myself over in nottingham again at the @lacemarkethouse getting ready for the saturday morning. The web streaming studio had just taken delivery of a settee (which is wonderful btw) and i had just gotten my head around the wiring up of the single lapel mic that we had been donated by @aquilatv - i ended up using the rode ntg-2 microphone to do interviews however. People started to arrive early and the main room soon filled up for the great starting session by @lesanto about ten years in the past and ten years into the future of all the wonderful technology and gadgets, gadgety we get to play with (you can see it on ustream) I got to do a session about posterous which i hoped was received well and some wordpress people seemed to like the simple approach to blogging and get the message i was trying to spread about it being so very simple. it was great to get people excited about a service that on the face of it looks too simple to be useful but actually under the hood is very powerful - i'm excited to get my friends and prizewinners on a collaboration blog about the cradlepoint products. Not only to keep in the loop with them about how they are getting on with the devices but also to try and learn new stuff they are finding the device can do. i know for instance that it has some kind of gps tracking/location thing that it can do (updating or something) and i'm sure we can build some really interesting mashups around that! :)Ben Walker was on usual fantastic form and that guy seems to have been born with that guitar attached to his fingers - he did a fantastic set and he still manages to surprise me with his delivery even when tired - he just goes into performance mode. you really should book him to enhance your social media style media events. honestly, you will not be disappointed. Some of the things i noticed that the web streaming studio now needs to start empowering/delivering on.- weekly skype dial in or tokbox chats. i now have the moderator tools and can manage a chat session better (timed chats weekly)
- get my greenscreen over to nottingham (if i can the darn thing in the bag!) and start playing with boinxtv again
- the unofficial cradlepoint users posterous of the ground and some funding together for the layout, design and slice.
- find a 'day' sponsor for the room and start to gather local nonprofits, charities - high quality video for their website or blog.
- additional second and third camera - one for macro on products and one for variety - donation or cheap hdmi out devices that work
- need to speak to blackmagic or find funding to get additional cards for the mac pro
- weekly live 'gravity' shows where we actually step through a product and service to compliment the 'audiogravity' audio podcast series
- we need sponsoring for the 4/8 channel alesis usb mixer
- revisit the configuration of the studio, look at organising the camera layout, cabling should be covered or 'out of sight'
- address the boomy sound of the room - find acoustic people who might be interested in at least giving us a quote for the work
- noticed that the video at times was a little bit blocky/compression on bambuser
- need to research distribution to multiple targets at the same time. media process/pipeline to do that.
the streaming studio now has a donated settee
So really chuffed to see everytime that i come into the studio changes and differences happening - really fills you with excitement for what it possible. I'm speaking with a few people to start putting some lists together for nonprofits in the area as well so we can capture some video interviews with them and give them some high quality video/audio content for their websites. I'll start to work on the website for booking services this coming week. i have a mockup but i think i need to revisit it to make it more fun and run it past a few people first.
The Web Streaming LaceMarket Studio Frame V1. Yay!
version 1 of the frame in the house.
In the style of the 'wizard of oz' - frames, curtains and fibre oh my!
So using the genius the idea of a gazebo (thanks @aquilatv) frame we put up a basic layout yesterday and @pcmcreative has been looking at the curtains drop for the frame today. we are hoping to get some kind of filming started next monday and have a round table chat about projects we are working on. will update on monday with a post and an embed and will update you with plenty of time to let you know the discussion topics.
exciting times.
Get yourself ready for mediacamp nottingham #mcn2
Call to Action! There will be a steering meeting (1 of a maximum of 3) to be held in the Boardroom of Lace Market House (also the venue of the event and with a delicious fibre connection) on Wednesday 3rd Feb from 6pm - 7.30pm. MediaCamp Nottingham, unless there are any major objections will be held on Saturday 27 March. People should keep an eye on @pcmcreative and @mc_notts twitter accounts for further details.
For anyone unfamiliar with last year's event our Google legacy is here http://bit.ly/MCN2009case for fibre, concurrent connections & snappy browsing
a slightly reduced fibre connection but speedy enough

Looking forward to the next couple of weeks and bringing over my mac pro for 1080i HD streams via bitgravity - i just wish bitgravity had a pay as you go client for testing. Although saying that other options exist using stickam and the independent control and the watershed system that ustream have. i bet one of them will have capacity for HD streaming sooner than later.
setting up once/twice a week in nottingham hotdesking
quicklink to this post | http://su.pr/2SyW3s
I've got a good feeling about nottingham.
Ever since i started going over to see caron lyons (@pcmcreative) and working together on the social media for the public sector event plus recent interviews i have an affinity for listening to my karma and feel like it is the right decision. Quite strange really because while waiting for the train last week i noticed some flats right next to the train station that would be ideal once this house situation is sorted - funny how certain things fit into place. I'm looking at hotdesking from lacemarkethouse once or twice a week and have secured a great deal for my monthly wired connection there (read: superfast) So, i'll be obviously offering the usual social media services and help while i'm hotdesking and i'll make sure to alert people when 'i'm in the office' if you want to drop in and maybe get some guidance or training/help while i'm in nottingham - i'm hoping some of the local businesses will require this. At the very least i'm hoping to make some good connections with businesses already in the lace market house and see how we can work together. Some other benefits that might not be immediately obvious are the equipment and other services i can now offer with this hispeed connection and my macpro onsite. I've listed them below. firing back up 'thegravity' video showit's been a long time coming and i'm chomping at the bit to do the video version of 'thegravity' again - i switched last year to making 'audiogravity' over on audioboo as it is a faster way to get some content out but i do miss doing the live/offlive/interactive gravity video show. you can find some of the episodes of the prerecorded version over at thegravity.blip.tv - i'm bringing that back with a new posterous vibe and distribution to it. should be fairly easy to setup. potential for a livestream 24/7 radio show
i'm been playing with audio livestreaming for years, i started with SAM on a windows machine and recently started using a great mac application for sending out the audio to a remote shoutcast server which has some great tools embedded. i have the capacity to do a radio show, social show and even call in skype functionality - with a small budget we could get a really decent mixer and start to do some weekly live shows. i've also got a really smart jquery live notification add in for websites that appears when the stream is live - that notification system needs to be expanded on. Maybe a weekly social media audio show with local businesses and guests - live tweetup sixth second pitches with live interactive voting. all possible. maybe we take some of the local podcasters and do a live show with a roundtable discussion on topics that the twitter community fire over in realtime. realtime officestream and HD experimentation
i've been waiting to get my hands on a chunky connection for sometime to work on some experiments with HD, the 16:9 perspective and different streaming solutions - i already know a few companies that can handle a HD stream and it would be good to build a HD livecast solution. axis bonjour ultimate camera mashup
tried this already and it works. axis cameras have the ability to be connected to via bonjour - i have a great little application that allows switching to bonjour enabled cameras on the network. using this we could switch between rooms and actually have static cameras setup in different locations - great for tweetups - maybe we should look at doing a social media big brother 24/7 social project onsite 'get your idea/business online for free in a weekend' sessions. got some ideas for art projects and using the bonjour cameras could be a good way to switch into businesses in the lacemarket house for updates from different companies of what is happening that week without them having to leave the office! greenscreen resource + boinxtv + livestreaming - realtime production
if i'm going to permanently have my macpro onsite (no way i can keep lugging it over - it's darn heavy) then i might as well have my greenscreen, canon hv20 1080i camera, hdmi to intensity blackmagic card and twin daylight 5300k lights over with me. this means i can offer a service for potential clients to have your virtual character on your website - those ones you see where a character walks on or appears on a transparent background etc - we can do all that. I expect to be onsite and up and running at the lace market house within the next few weeks. follow me on twitter for updates - i guess i should make a public google calendar for when i'm onsite. I'm hoping that if things go well i might require to be over in nottingham more often. exciting.
