it's the simple things in life.

good chat, good coffee and freshly cooked different foods daily bonding people together from the locality around open conversations -- a decent cafe space in sneinton finally (now with wifi!)

i found out about the secret cafe through cj (@pcmcreative) about a month ago as we went along on friday evening to show our support, record some interviews and take a few photos.

fast forward a month and last week i just finally got around to installing the phs300 cradlepoint wireless router in (as part of my community project that i never started a year ago) -- see the blog post after this one for more on that.

with mifi up and running i spent a few days there last week for lunch and had some great soups, salad and tartlets but more so conversation. it was great to hear people being upbeat and realistic about the near future.

doing something to change their current course in life, inspiring through doing with a can do attitude towards running a space to serve people a meal for a reasonable cost -- we even had some dropped off to us on friday which was awesome after a few pints at antenna.

you can find the sneinton secret kitchen down trent road near the st christopher church (it's next door) you can't miss the sign really on the railings.

the space runs from wednesday to friday from 9:30am (i think) till 2:30pm (might be 10:30 i forget) and food is normally ready around 11:30 ish for those looking to just drop by to see what's on that day.

i'm really hoping that it goes from strength to strength there and that more non-profit ideas and services come together there for the whole of the community.

great work marsha for getting it going!

this project is sponsored by chc-land of lace market house.

phil here from @fibrecamp studios in the heart of the lacemarket and i'm posting this to my main blog, the fibreca.mp site and over on the IMPS site that shawn asked me to become a contributor on.  this is pretty cool news so i thought i would update you with progress of the web tv studio down here on high pavement.

we got the television up in reception!

yes, we are super pleased because it means that we can start to progress building a custom theme for posterous that will aggregate all the rss feed content from the companies in the building.  we are using some cool plugins to allow us to rotate the tabs in a browser so swapping out from different media views.  the first view will be the themed lacemarket fibrecamp page with some neat jquery code connecting to the posterous api.

this will allow us to provide an easy way for people to submit news to a central blog location as well as creating movement in an ajax infinite scroll arrangement - we are also thinking of using this for media events in general - it's pretty cool tech actually - more on that as we develop it out.  should take a month or so.

the ultimate aim with the screen is to get us to move on the community television idea.  at the moment we are just bringing people into the fibrecamp space to record interviews and tell us about services and products and we have done quite a few but we want the space to be constantly used 2/3 times a week - we have a few coaches, fashion experts and radio presenters using the services in a paid manner but we are also looking for interesting projects and discussion/brainstorming groups that we can gather in the space every week and stream out live to bambuser - let us know if you have some ideas to bring in.

the hyperlocal internet tv will work quite simply.  from the 3/4 hours of content we produce (hope to be more as we scale) we will put that in an automated looping wistia media embed.  this embed works on ipad/iphone/ipod and also on the desktop - it is a html5 player so it will work anywhere.

the best thing about it is we can track time watched as a heatmap and also track a bunch of other metrics.  we have a master feed of everything coming out of the studio and separate rss feeds and social media channels for each show - all together this makes for quite a chunky distribution network of content from the local area.

we are really keen to get the community tv service up and running and distributed across the internet and ideally locally via some kind of interconnected network between venues like the broadway, tea shops, shops in hockley and antenna.   we think there is huge potential to have a local webtv station of sorts with a variety of content and education material from social media news and daily programming.

Intro

quicklink | rico mexican kitchen (twitter)

with no idea how the interview would go and with no preparation as to the content of the video it was fantastic to see marcela go into organized food show mode - believe it or not this was i believe the first time marcela has been on camera and watching back the video i felt it was on of the best examples of how a hyperlocal community studio show could be made.  great to have finally nailed the quality as well - even if the files sizes are huge watching them at 720p even from this low end canon hv20 it really pops.

had a great discussion about a variety of things to do with the business side of rico kitchen (they are on twitter btw) but also about how to utilize the sauces in some of your every day food making to give things that extra zip.

the tamales were just fantastic and it is great they are now selling these - i need to get some pricing on those as they freeze really well and can be reheated in a microwave very quickly.  perfect for a certain ark project! :)

i hope you like the video, it was really fun to record and i'm looking to further talks with marcela about a side project regarding breakfast, electric cards and geo location.

nuff said right? :)

Hyperlocal-hoods

quicklink | http://www.merrimaking.co.uk

Founded as a means to fund fun. Merrimaking is a boutique design house dedicated to hand and custom-made pieces.

Absolutely love that first line, founded to a means to FUND fun.  that's the most inventive and honest starting piece of content about a company i have seen in a long time and i had the heads up (no pun intended) to this hyper local company from someone travelling in from london (thanks @luciebean)

i'm all about hyperlocal this year, this year more than any other year because i'm in a city that has a massive creative outpouring that is finding it's voice - it's early days and people are connecting and doing awesome things.  breaking down the doors and making themselves heard.  making products and services that people want or will pay for and whenever i see someone 'trying' i just have to help in whatever way i can.

i'm meeting up with the guys to interview tomorrow about merrimaking just before i see the awesome @hannahpatterson to start recording content for the web presenter shows output we want to do.  seems to be quite a demand for that.

ps.  i'd really like a hood too (to keep my ears warm only of course!)

quicklink | http://www.mygocard.co.uk

in episode two of the mygocard videoblogging series we are covering the targets of the digital inclusion project utilizing the mygocard and the fast way of paying money from one account to another to speed up the process of the worker getting paid and at the same time talking about and empowering both the communication between the client, the recruitment company and the worker.

i want to re-ignite the homeless, the unemployed and those wanting to work a number of hours a week to have access to work and jobs that fit into that persons day to day left instead of the usual nine to five.  doing work around the times, places and styles of work that they want to do.

we are concentrating on a lightweight web app with a iphone/ipad application for the worker when they are mobile.  of course this does limit the amount of people that can utilize this at the moment because they would need the iphone, ipad or itouch but we are looking to do this as a testcase set of users to see if the 'practice' works before looking for bigger investment and making it work via other systems and sms/email from the most basic of mobile devices.

setting out to achieve.. ..

- recruitment companies onboard
- faster turnaround/instant payment of funds for work done
- the 16 hrs or less unemployed
- merging geolocation technology and checkin (automated)
- audio, video and pictures evidence
- customer reviews and feedback (internal to start)
- facebook app and intergration
- leaderboards and value within a community
- regenerate loyality with local business regarding rewards

looking for iphone/ipad developers who want to be involved with this project! - get in touch.

we stream these shows out live on justin.tv - you can find this one here - please subscribe so future shows when we do interactive feedback you can join in on the chatroom.
