Social-media-community-nottingham-caves

in our final episode of this three part series we talk briefly about the social media output and community building they are doing online to raise awareness about the project.  the videos they have created so far have collectively had over 100k of views on youtube and they have managed to get good coverage from some major blogs online in the last six months.

with a chunk of caves yet to process we can expect this project to be a great success over the remaining time.  it was a pleasure to work with the nottingham caves team and it was fantastic to seem them using bikes to ferry all their kit around.  fantastic!

3d-scanner-nottingham-caves

in ep 02 (ep01 is here btw) we take a brief look at the 3d scanning head that is used in documenting the cave layout and structure.  these things are not cheap at around 80k and are extremely precise.

david walker does a great job of explaining how the system works.  the speed in which it can do all these calculations and render a 3d scene is pretty incredible to see first hand.

in a three part mini series we will once again explore the cave system underneath lace market house documenting this time the descent, the scanning practice and how using social media has increased the exposure to this two year project funded by a variety of bodies in the nottingham area.

with over 100k of video views collectively on the 3d scanning renders and flythroughs on youtube the project is seeing real community traction through the production of the real life rendering of these fantastic spaces and is being featured on a variety of high profile news outlets around the web.

in episode one we talk quickly with david about the revisit to scan the cave space.

because fibrecamp sits on some caves. yes caves.

blame @danyork for this video.

we have some of the guys in from @NottinghamCaves who were doing some 3d laser scanning of the caves under lace market house.  i mentioned this in a tweet that i was recording some video with them and dan was pretty excited about the fact that fibrecamp is situated next to and on top of said mentioned caves.

Just so i could show him the age of the building before i actually get to post up the other video of the caves i thought i would do this quick run and gun video of lace market house and the fibrecamp studio area next door to the limestone cave area right next door ;)

i’m putting a version of the video on youtube as well because for some reason wistia seems to be compressing the heck out of it.

david walker exploring caves of lace market house

really interesting to meet david walker this morning about his great project doing 3d scanning of the caves in and around nottingham.  this post is following on from a blog post i did last weekend about the caves under nottingham castle.

david is heading out to california so we were extremely lucky to have gotten an interview with him and nic also allowed us to head down into the caves.

i did a quick audio interview with david and we shot some great video footage of the caves below lace market house! :)

the sandstone caves of nottingham laser scanned

Media_httpimgskitchco_hnadh

took a photo of the caves at the bottom of the lace market area of town this morning and @thom_white suggested i check out this website.

you can also find them on twitter - i do hope they reply and that i can interview Dr Walker.  Maybe he can give us some more history about this part of the lace market? – i need to run it past nik first of course.

we like the idea of laser scanners here at the fibre studio in the lace market house – we have caves here.  in fact in the other door on the other side of the studio we have limestone caves.  it’s like walking into a wormhole – one side you have this basement high speed digital studio and then on the other side of the wall you have this almost forgotten period of time.

a research project, with the University of Nottingham, is to scan all 450+ of Nottingham’s sandstone caves.

is that not fantastic? – look at that escape route from the castle.  must have also been a bit of a weak spot if people knew that existed back in the day as well of course.
