i sorta like it really.  even thou it feels like i'm magnetic and someone keeps switching the poles.

my day is curated into time periods that require me currently regardless of head state, physical fitness and emotive worldly responses to buckle down and get on with the jobs at hand.  sometimes those jobs at hand are fired at me like a pack of aggressive street ninjas with shurikens of digital information and i have to get all neo to bob and weave around them.

but sometimes, i get to look around.

the hockley traders meeting at baabar in nottingham

dan sent me over a few photos i took on his iphone 4 the other day of the new shooter bar called baabar.

i really like the styling in the venue.

it has this computing 'hackers' type of look that the bar (cyberdelia btw) had - apart from the roller disco parts of course.  we had this awesome metre long pizza too which at the moment is half price at £8 - a bargain.

looking forward to interviewing all the people in the local area before the fashion show, during and after in a hope of driving more traffic and footfall to the hockley area.  an interesting community project.

it's up (that's what she said)

next week i go sourcing 'magic arms' to be able to hang the lights and audio equipment from it properly.  i'm sure we can find something similar, they have to have that ball joint second arm thou so we can get a custom location/fitting for the lights thou.

all good.  at least this part is done.

the grid array is taking shape. should be finished tomorrow

i'm not sure which bit to be excited about.  all of these early ideas are growing towards building a really smart organic on the cheap studio that we can drop into and record video shows as and when.   i have been busy putting those 'show' ideas in between uploading and encoding of video today.  i'm really looking forward to introducing a 'coffee shop' and a 'open mic stream audio mashup' kinda thing.

i'm thinking we need to start looking for a decent mixer.

digital inclusion, prepaid and the low cost mobile phone

so i'm starting to see a pattern forming in the way that i'm utilising my technology these days.

almost forced on me in the last six months due to my lack of work and funds i have had to adapt on many levels to be able to move forward in the social space i have engaged with in the last three years.  it has not been a terrible thing.  realising that i have other ways of living low profile with minimal resources yet optimising those experiences to give me at least the basics has changed my fundamental requirements of life.

i'm not running out and scraping together money for the latest gadget.  i have requirements for some but i'm not longer playing that desire game of giving myself sharp short term life hacks of happiness by having the most up to date bling of tech.

chewing on the fat of my own words about the latest and greatest device that 'does not quite live up to the hype' and also being concerned about the 'bigger picture' of the world around us as i travel back and forth on the public train network of this country has really allowed me to focus on what is important.

my recent investment of £12 in a mobile phone that does text and phone calls with a lcd screen was bought about because of a number of things but mainly the failure of an android smartphone (sic) to make phone calls.

the one had been on for a number of days and although i know i can just turn it off and on again to refresh the memory and clear out any memory leaking apps it highlighted an important thing to me.  a phone should still, always be able to make a phonecall.

in an emergency situation i should be able to in a number of clicks make a phone call, of course i have issues then if the networks are working but the majority of phones that i have bought in my past have been foremost a phone, that you can make and receive calls on.

this lag issue set me off thinking about what was important, what other areas do i have similar style 'memory leaks' in my life.   it all dove tailed from there.

i realise that as my business card suggests as the 'digital esp landscape spirit guide' assisting people along with their own digital journey means that the digital inclusion part should assist in the overall message.

you do not need the latest tech, you do not need to spend buckets of money on that fancy website, the tools that can assist you in production, distribute and aggregation do already exist.  you simple need to organise your output pipeline and only buy the basics until you require to scale up.  having a base set of tools is vital for any craftsperson - digital or analog.

the mygocard (note: i work with mygocard as a retention of my social media services) is similar to a lot of other cards out there dealing with prepaid mastercard services but they stand out to me because the features that they have thought about with the card make it an ideal candidate for the 'always on the move digital low income creative' like myself.

the phone and the way i can load money on the card and pay for my giffgaff mobile sim packages (for the vx1) via the website make it an idea product for my light needs.

starting to learn to travel lightly through life by being in control of what you have and use is really waking me up to a new side of life that should i have always been living.

i've tried pretty much everything on the menu.   regular partaking in the hummus (homemade and nice smooth lemon kick) and the citrus creme brulee rocks my socks as well.  that smoothie drink is pretty k-rad for a morning start if you get in early.  right, must go consume lunch.

video progress going well today.  encoding.

i literally had ten minutes to get to the station so i'm sorry about the weird things in the background (agree abi!) but it was in a similar space as the wesley and dan video - these are meant to be raw and ready in a loose video blogging style.

carrying on the antenna people with dan and wesley

one of the things i find comforting about social media is the ability to shoot a raw video and give people an insight into the people that live behind the bricks and mortar of an exterior of a building.  how many times do you find yourself walking past a place wondering what the food, drink and atmosphere is like inside.  i like to use social media to strip away those layers and give you a 'warmfront' to the contents within.

if your creative and live within an hour of nottingham do check out antenna.  for £25 a year for membership for the 10mbit internet feed alone it's a complete bargain.  if your a video artist that needs to upload video you will find the connection is smoking fast - the other benefits like the food and coffee (which btw is £1.15! a cup) make it really stand out. the food is of a very highly polished and well thought out product menu base which is constantly being updated.

i love the place.

fibreca.mp update | extensions, wiring and frames oh my

a few updates. .

- the 10 metre hdmi cable is in and working perfectly
- the 5 metre usb2 cable works on the snowball
- the frame for the matrix to hang things from started

dreaming. .

- wirecast will release v4 with hotkey support
- i get an ipad with vnc control to my mac pro
- a mac mini with vpn installed and running 24/7
- additional hd cameras or dv at 16:9
- plinth for standing at
- mounting up the projector screen and projector

hdmi/dv cable extensions arrive at fibrecamp

just after this video the hdmi 10 metre extension came and that works perfectly well across the floor to the camera.

i guess we will be mounting this to the ceiling matrix once that is built and fixed to the ceiling - looking forward to playing around with different configurations of the bars to mount lighting and microphones too.  i'm guessing that will introduce a whole other bunch of problems we never really thought of before we had the idea of the bars.

need to start thinking about power requirements as well and a space along one of the walls for integrated shelfs so people can sit with their laptops - we need to work on the hotdesking idea and might move that upstairs.

nothing more i like to see is that smile and happiness on my daughters face.

as ella was going back at lunch today and we could not make the 3pm cake-out that was on today we decided to nip in yesterday for a few drinks and obviously sample some cake.  a lovely place.  looking forward to testing out the rest of the product range in the near future.

nablopomo august // green // o6 - the basement

work is going a head at pace in the new fibreca.mp studio at the lace market house in nottingham.  we tested the port today and our connection to the fibre is setup and ready to roll - i do need to setup a permanent vpn to the studio and a little mini wifi network for visitors this coming week.  need to look at re-conditioned mac minis and a switch is probably the best way.

for this week we will be setting up the green screen, lighting and plinth in a temporary fashion so we can catchup with video recording for clients.  work needs to be done on fixing the camera up to the ceiling with the lights but we can take a little bit of time on that.   the sofa area will also require a camera view for visiting guests also, actually i see that we will need about four cameras in all - a main camera, secondary item table for viewing items for the shows and guest cam for the sofa before people come up the stage.

additional things running through my mind right now

- leads to use the microphones direct via cable instead of wireless
- quality microphones
- mixing desk
- jack up the upstream internet connectivity (50/100meg)
- deathstar project install in the space.
- posterous themed calendar and booking system
raceonline2012.org - setting up the studio ready ahead of time.

finally got around to looking around at the art organisation

i finally got to meet liam and the TAO.

finally_got_around_to_looking_.zip (763 KB)

For ten years TAO has pioneered a portfolio of community access buildings, supporting the arts and art in education.  In each project TAO creates opportunity for artists and arts related practitioners to access affordable (and occassionally free) space, from which they can teach workshops and classes, prepare new artwork, exhibit, perform, sing and play - a platform for creative expression, and understanding, for the benefit of the wider community.

during my time travelling over to nottingham i keep on seeing/heading past the art organisation premises on the main road outside the nottingham train station.  an incredible building, huge and expansive.  i have an affinity with homebrew style kind of projects like this.  i feel that it might be a neat little home for similar deathstar projects.

all men/women to the moving rooms front and within a few days we were done. we just moved the 'big' bits today from the studio, my mac which is uber heavy and the sofa, monitors and general cables and such like.

the basement is cooler, quiet and when i left today the fibre socket on the wall was active.  i'll be putting the feet back on the sofa on monday and unpacking all the mac pro equipment that helps us stream.  the space still needs some additional work for the lighting to have a fixed/moveable position with items along the roof to take the 'mess' that you normally have with stands in a studio (that people trip over) and we have had a new lock fitted and some painting and damp proofing was also in progress.

looking forward to @danielroseart getting his hands on some kind of projector/projection system so we can design the space as you descend into the basement studio. got to get the space up and running as fast as possible as we have videos to be recorded.  looking at additional audio resources next week as well.

a busy week.

nablopomo august // green // o4 - fibrecamp on the move

exciting.  moving the stuff will be a bit of a chore however.  i really need to start asking about making that ethernet port live downstairs actually today if we are moving downstairs in the morning.  i better go and do that now.  will try and do a proper video catchup later on to let you know how things are going.

i'm just working through the top and tail of the video interviews i managed to do last night.  i'm afraid i do not have imovie 09 my laptop to be able to export them in HD but the full size video version looks ok as well.  i'll try and get hold of it for future edits on my lappy.

i had a good night all in all, realised how much i have moved on in the world of geek.  that is a good thing.   a great turnout, some interesting sessions and the show and tell was well cool.

new basement studio before pictures after clearout

new_basement_studio_before_pic.zip (7167 KB)

the basement area we looked at no longer than a week or so ago has been attacked at full force and the majority of the stuff removed to make way for us and our studio. the staff at the @lacemarkethouse have been amazing and started to turn around the studio at full pace.  a few more things need to happen on their side and then we get access around thursday time to look at putting the curtains around the edging.

the sound is boomy like it was up here right now because nothing is in the space.  i'm thinking my beanbags, some chairs and the sofa will look great down there.  i'm getting super excited again as we can really do the studio justice with that little bit more space that we will have by having the basement. the sound is nicer and it is a lot cooler.

more thursday onwards! :)

a brief reflection in the 'third' place of the studio

all good things come to those that wait they said.

i tend to believe that comment to be incorrect for the new future we live in. with always on demand content requirements we have moved into a different phase of homegrown, higher quality and lower costing media output - combine this with local media and a cross section of community based projects with a smattering of social media you can get some really interesting things of the ground! :)

wait? - no chance.
